9/8/1962Mughal Emperor Akbar was proclaimed as successor of Humayun at the age of tewelve years at Kalanur, Gurudaspur district, Punjab. Akbar (1542-1605), grandson of Babur, became third Mughal Emperor at the age of 13 years. He de-established Islam as state religion and declared himself impartial ruler of Hindus and Muslims. He also encouraged Art, Culture and Religious Tolerance.

7/15/1783Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy, great Indian Merchant, Industrialist and philanthrophist, was born in Bombay. He aided famine relief, financed public works like wells, roads, causeways and bridges; founded dispensaries and hospitals; established educational institutions and scholarship funds; etc. He was receipent of a Knighthood and many medals.
12/10/1969Norman Borlaug, the Iowa-born crop expert, whose research on new strains of high-yielding rice and wheat has led to a Green Revolution in developing countries, was awarded the Nobel peace prize today. Working at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center of Mexico since 1944, Borlaug, 56, has directed a team of agronomists working on the development of new crop plant strains that have allowed Third World farmers to multiply yields dramatically. His organization has trained farm technicians from 29 countries, including India, Pakistan and Turkey, enabling them to move steadily toward the goal of self-sufficiency in food production.
