Historical Event on 2/16/1944
Dadasaheb Phalke passed away in Nasik at the age of 74. He is remembered as the 'Father of Indian Cinema'. He produced India's first feature Film, 'Raja Harishchandra'. He was Director, Producer, Writer, Editor & Laboratorian. Dada Saheb Phalke Award issued by Government of India is given in his memory.

10/16/1905	Bengal was partitioned by Lord Curzon on the pretext of it being too big to administer. Instead of dividing it on the basis of non-Bengali areas, the division was on the basis of Hindus and Muslims. Britishers thought that would succeed in increasing Hindu - Muslim tensions. The tremor of partition was felt throughout India and was regarded as an insult and challenge to Indian Nationalism. A movement was launched by the moderates. New method of protests 'Swadeshi and Swaraj' became the slogan of the common man and the whole of India was drawn into the national movement.
1/4/1932	Mahatma Gandhi and other members of his All-India National Congress are back in jail again. After the collapse of the London conference, British authorities cracked down even harder on Gandhi and his followers, and the Mahatma urged Indians to increase their acts of civil disobedience. ""Wake up from sleep,"" Gandhi said as he ordered a boycott of British goods. ""Discard foreign cloth. Discard narcotics. Discard violence. Defy all orders calculated to crush the national spirit."" The government declared Gandhi's Congress an illegal organization. Under new laws, even peaceful picketing is illegal. The Congress party responded to the crackdown by recruiting more followers and striking more plants.

5/27/1930	India's major cities are seething with unrest following the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi and thousands of his followers in the campaign of civil disobedience against British rule. Civil unrest in Bombay, where at least six were killed and sixty injured.
2/19/1974	Bombay High Oil stock was found in the sea near Mumbai.
12/14/1969	Bishen Bedi takes 7-98 (career-best) v Australia at Calcutta.
12/10/1902	Nijalingappa Siddavanahalli, president of Indian National Congress and politician, was born at Haluvagalu (Bellary).
