2/21/1983More than 600 people were killed in the Indian state of Assam after student agitators protesting the immigration of Muslim refugees from Bangladesh attempted to stop state elections.
5/31/1970Indira Gandhi called for international help as the civil war in Bangladesh, or East Pakistan, had turned two million people into refugees. Many of them were suffering from cholera and smallpox. The authorities of West Pakistan refused to care for them, and India couldn't afford to.
8/16/1946Hindus and Muslims riot in Calcutta. 90 people lost their lives and other 900 were hurt. The Muslim League observed a ""Direct Action Day"" and announced its withdrawal of support from all plans.
